Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
About Curling
What exactly is curling?
Curling is a unique winter sport played on ice where two teams of four players slide heavy, polished granite stones towards a target area called the "house". Points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each "end" (when each team has thrown their 8 stones). Strategy, teamwork, and precision are key elements of the game. See more here.
Is curling physically demanding?
Curling involves moderate physical activity, including balance, flexibility (for the delivery), and sweeping. However it can be adapted for various fitness levels and abilities. Stick curling is also an option for those with mobility issues, including wheelchair users.
Do I need to learn how to slide with the stone?
Not at all - most beginners start with the no-slide delivery (which served the sport well for over 400 years!) and can progress to the sliding delivery if/when they’re ready. In an initial session we aim to teach the basics and get right into enjoying a game!
Do you have an age limit?
Juniors typically start from age 10 upwards. Curling is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, however children under 10 can find the stones heavy, and it can find it frustrating to be unable to put a stone in play. If you have questions or need additional guidance then get in touch and we’ll work out what’s best.
How heavy is a curling stone?
About 20kg and made of solid granite!
What should I wear to play curling?
Wear warm, loose-fitting clothing in layers (it's played on ice, but you'll warm up!). Gloves and a hat are also recommended.
What about footwear?
We provide curling shoes, which have special grippy rubber soles that allow you to walk on the ice. A slippy sole is only used for a sliding delivery, and this would generally not be covered in a beginners session.
Getting Started
Do you offer 'Come and Try' or taster sessions?
Absolutely! We regularly run taster sessions for those curious about curling. Check our Try Curling Page or Contact Us for the next available dates. These sessions provide a basic introduction to the rules, safety, and how to deliver a stone.
What options are there for larger groups?
Coached Private Group Sessions and Corporate Events are also popular options for beginners (please email for availability).
Do I need any prior curling experience?
Absolutely not! Many of our members started as complete beginners. We welcome players of all skill levels and offer coaching for newcomers.
Finding Us
How do I get to the rink?
By car - 5 minutes from the A21 Contact Us
By train - Tonbridge (not Tunbridge Wells!) is the station with the most convenient connection by taxi. The journey from central London takes slightly under an hour.
Club Membership
What are my options for more regular play?
We run internal club leagues for members of varying abilities throughout the season. We also participate in friendly matches against other clubs and may enter teams into regional or national competitions.
What equipment do I need if I become a member? Do I have to buy it straight away?
You don't need to buy any special equipment to start. The club can provide sliders (which fit over your shoe to slide on the ice) and brushes. The curling stones are always provided by the rink.
When does the club typically play or practice?
We currently run club nights on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings at 8pm, and junior coaching on Sunday mornings at 11am.
How do I become a member?
The best way is often to come along to a taster session first. If you're ready to join, you can fill out a membership form available on our website or contact us at info@tunbridgewellscurlingclub.co.uk
Is there a social side to the club?
Definitely! Curling is a very social sport. We often gather before or after games, and we organise social events throughout the year. It's a great way to meet new people.
